A little bit of advice I got for you is invest in a nice binder, it makes the collection feel more fancy and in return makes you more happy when you look at it. Sounds dumb but it's true so don't cheap out on a binder.

Only true if you're talking about playing in the supported official tournment formats from gen 3-4. Gen 1 and 2 had the modified, later unlimited, format that included every printed card at the time and most cards gen 5 onwards are legal through expanded. The hgss cards even have a supported format online. Thats also not counting the value of revisiting old formats, which happen to be very fun, with friends. Hardcore tournament grinders for example are big fans of the dp-on format and bring decks with them to play with in between matches.

I have perfect size clear sleeves and I love them, I'm not sure if it protects the card better but taking them out of the big sleeve and holding them in the perfect size clear sleeves feels like you're holding the card raw but with out actually touching it. It's a nice feeling.

They're pretty useful because they help protect the top of the card from anything that might enter the sleeve like dirt or god forbid liquids. They also feel nice to shuffle when paired with good sleeves.

I had a infernape X in first grade, some 4th graders stole it from me. They told me they wanna make a trade offer for my infernape and told me to get my card out of my card binder. When I pulled it out they suddendly screamed that a teacher is coming (card trading wasnt allowed in my school) and I looked to the entrance of the hallway. Back in those days at tournments, they used to let you use Japanese cards as long as you had a reference card on stand by. Because Japanese cards were significantly cheaper (think $10 vs $50 when you need 4 copy's of a card) people would play their entire deck in Japanese and buy one copy of all of the cards they needed as reference. They got rid of that rule and reprinted several of the staples like uxie as easy to get promos to ease the blow.

1st edition common cards are overvalued. Many people like you have dozens of them but few are selling. This causes the prices to be unusually high for literal common cards.

Some graded common even go for $2000+
I'd rather get a binder full of mint holos like pic related rather than a single common at that price.

I collect essentially anything up to Neo Destiny and I'm so pissed. All I've ever wanted since I was a kid is to complete the WotC Black Star promo set, and I'm only missing four cards. Mewtwo #12 and Suicune are still easy enough (not sure why I don't have them already), but the other two I'm missing are fucking Pokémon Center and Lucky Stadium, which I almost bought a few years ago for around $20-25 apiece, but decided to wait. Then this shit happened and they went up tenfold. I just can't justify spending $400 on two cards. This sucks.

I havent collected serious since DPPt/HGSS era, did some effort to get a master set Evolution but thats it, mostly because of money issues, but I was lucky enough to meet Mitsuhiro Arita last year. Def one of my most memorable moments in my life.

You should buy the recent Japanese Misty deck boxed set, if you're trying to get both English and Japanese versions. The supply is starting to run out and it's still sold close to retail price.

Japanese cards are better quality and thus grade better. But PSA 9 CD promo charizard is a 700$ card and PSA 9 Shining mew a 1500$ card despite being printed in the millions. So population size doesn't matter as much if the card is popular

ex era cards went up substancially but I still feel they're fairly priced for how rare they are.
You have to keep in mind these are ultra rares above holo rares from sets that were less popular than the WotC era.

English cards are hell to grade anyways, reminds me of this card. Bought it from a lady who had it in a stack of cards WITHOUT sleeve. I told her that fact and said I can buy it for a cheaper price, think I bought it for around $10 for like ~10 years ago. Got it graded for 5-6 years ago and to my suprise I got a 10.

I know it's still worth a good amount, but since I don't plan on selling it it feels a bit pointless getting it graded if it's gonna get an unsightly grade considering all the edgewear and crust on the back. Seems to be lacking any scratches to the holofoil though which is nice. I suppose I'd consider it for preservation purposes, for now I prefer the look of it in a binder. Here's a closer look where you can kinda make out the swirl in its mouth.

Just for you, some edgescum/surfacescum. It's not completely abysmal, but still far from pack fresh. The edgewear also translates to a fair bit of silvering from the front that you can't see very clearly in the other pic.

Yeah, most of my older cards have too much wear akin to that rayquaza to achieve high grades, but I'm content with the sentimental value they have (not that it isn't nice to be sitting on something worth a few hundred)

I'm not the biggest expert on Japanese sets so might have the finer details wrong, but in general English sets contain the contents of two Japanese sets. In Vivid Voltage's case that should be everything from Legendary Pulse and Electrifying Tackle. There are sometimes exceptions, such as holiday sets and outliers like shiny charizard V which I believe does not have a Japanese counterpart. As far as the cards themselves there is no huge difference besides the colour of the borders and the logo on the back (and the quality is generally higher for Japanese cards).

I played the TCG religiouslyand competitively from 2003 to 2011 so I have a ton of cards from that period and before that. I've got several Shinings and Gold Stars and a ton of old ex's and random rare cards pretty much all in mint condition.
But I live in Sweden but it seems like such a long and convoluted fucking process to send cards abroad to get them graded and I hate it.

Ignore this anon, binders are TERRIBLE for card collecting. The rings can very easily damage cards if you're not extremely careful.

What you want is an ALBUM. Something with the card pages built in.
