The story is practically null and void because too much is going on, and all of it is just "i hate you, fight me" or "battle me again anon". It's only until the end where you get some actual fucking story. Fuck hop, fuck bede, fuck marnie.

I love how the games make it a point to hammer in that she's weaker than literally every gym leader, and like 1 level above the random nameless gym challengers in the post-game. She's not even a rival, she's just a random girl that you happen to know who is incapable of doing anything but getting her ass kicked and looking cute.

There really isn't that much of a story for most of the game, it's just a normal Galar League tournament. The only outliers are a few Dynamax incidents and the presence of Team Yell, who end up being a red herring and aren't really villains. I personally didn't mind this at all because Pokemon shines when the story doesn't try too hard, like in Gens 1 and 2. SwSh does this pretty well until the very end with the introduction of Macro Cosmos and Rose as the "villain". Totally unnecessary. The game would have been fine without them. Give people a region to explore, Pokemon to catch, and some bad guys to stop and they'll make their own fun, you don't need an evil team that is in the game for the express purpose of opposing the player character, and you especially don't need a world-ending threat.

She has barely any presence and barely any other personality beyond 'is nice''. Her design is also just...really forgettable, the only kind of interesting element is the devil horns hair which is...not exactly new.
Hop was extremely annoying (probably the most annoying character in the series) and Bede was a faggot, but they were dynamic characters, they were expressive, they were fleshed out, they had actual character, they were given solid resolutions. There was an attempt. Marnie has absolutely nothing, besides being an okay transition into learning about her far more interesting brother.

I agree about Pokemon not needing much of a story, but the rest of the game needs to be fun and SwSh didn't even have anything to explore in it's base game. And having a bunch of badly handled rivals to make up for there being little story doesn't help. At least just focus on one rival that's not a complete joke.

then again this applies to a lot of characters in swsh but they really just made marnie particularly bland as fuck for a 'major' character

Not him, but Hop's arc isn't that deep, and his motivations are realized, but incredibly basic.
That, however, is more than can be said for 99% of Pokemon characters, including (especially) Marnie. Hop has shit going on, Marnie doesn't. Simlpe as.

I'd agree that the exploration was definitely lacking, I'd love to see the next games be one massive Wild Area. As for the rivals I didn't mind them in Sw/Sh, having more than one made sense because of the format of the tournament. Hop is definitely the "real" rival and I think they did a decent job with his characterization. He definitely feels a LOT like Hau, to the point where they even copy Hau's inferiority complex, thinking he has to become as good of a trainer as Hala, but there are some nice moments with Hop as he tries to emulate his brother and later goes off to do his own thing, no longer living in Leon's shadow. There's some subtle character stuff in these games that I really like. Peony referring to himself as a former Gym Leader despite also being a former Champion is great because later you learn that he didn't like being Champion and quit when Rose became chairman.

Anyways, at least with Hop you actually spend time with him to see his (shitty) personally emerge. You only interact with Marnie three times in the main story (because the narrative spends too much time jerking off Leon and Hop, but that's besides the point).
She has no personality because Game Freak couldn't be assed to give her enough screen time to develop her character. In the end, she just ends up being Hop but without the hyperactive ADD.
