This is truly awful. Why did they move to 3D? They should have used 2D forever. In 2D, images are not to be taken literally: you have to use imagination. In 3D, it is hard to not take at face value everything you see.

I am just saying, I can cut them some slack because, with their 2D sprites, you weren't meant to see everything at face value. Sprites barely moved! Look at sprite games like Guardian Tales and you will see that is high quality standard for 2D sprites but, for Pokémon, it was clear that animation was not their focus back then.
This switch has been extremely rocky.

Regidrago wouldn't have time to turn since it already fired it's attack, turning wouldn't actually have done anything to change the trajectory.
