This. Wild area was poorly implemented, needs side quests and more changes in scenery/elevation, not just some huge open valley. The new DLCs have improved on the scenery aspect, but it still needs more quests and things to do to make it feel alive and part of the game rather than just some giant safari park. I think the visuals and design outside of the wild area were actually decent, Glimwood Tangle and the village near it was pretty cool-looking, I felt the ost was nice and went well with the environments. Raid battles get boring quick and have tediously long animations. The story was rushed, absolute dogshit and difficulty was extremely easy. The end-game is very lacking in content. The ease of getting a competitive mon in this game is a nice QOL change though.

Climate is fucked. Weather does whatever the fuck it wants where and whenever it wants. Despite most location-based evolution methods being retconned or not present in the game so there's no longer a reason to cram every biome ever into a small region they did anyways and it's worse than usual because now we've got TWO icy areas on opposite sides of the map surrounded by grassy/forested areas, one of them has a desert nearby, and it's clearly not large enough of a region to stretch from the cold zone of one hemisphere into the cold zone of the other.

Great theme and flavor, just like SM, the region actualy feels like it has a proper theme and aesthetic instead of just being "normal pokemon region with one or two towns that kiiiinnd of hint at the real world inspiration".

Good Pokedex, definitely felt like I was meeting new monsters nearly every moment of the game.

World design was very weak, for every great route there is one that is literally a straight line or Y fork path, Wild Area's overall shape is very featureless flat too, though both Isle of Armor and Tundra improved that greatly to the point where I'm not sure if I even want normal routes in the next game.

Overworld encounters were great and I hope are fleshed out even further. I love shit like "shy pokemon runs away from you" or "trap pokemon tries to snap at you from underground"

Story and characters were charming and fit the sports theme but really needed some real cutscenes, Being told "something is happening off-screen" instead of seeing it just feels lame, it reminds of FE3H, which has great cutscenes every once in a while, but is filled with cheesy autistic moments that are supposed to be dramatic but just feel stupid because they didn't bother animating them and we just see drawings scrolling thru the screen while the text begs us to imagine what happened. Lack of properly animated cutscenes feel cheap, always

Post-game is weak, but I didn't mind it because raising monsters for competitive is so streamlined now that I got easily 300-ish hours out of battling online and crafting teams exclusive and never felt like I was grinding, so that was very nice and I hope those QoL steps stay and in fact evolved in future games. I would like meaty post-games to return too, but since XY, SM and now SwSh show that Gamefreak have very little interested in delivering that, atleast I hope they keep making the multiplayer aspect smooth and pleasurable.

Also Y-Comm is messy, great idea, bad netcode, don't throw it away and fix it instead please.

Very mixed feelings, being a Welshman. It feels like Britain but it feels like the shitty side of Britain. The bad end of town side of Britain. James Turner clearly does have a very good image of Britain in his mind, he probably thinks this place sucks and he probably hates the monachy and Britain's vibrant history (you know, the only interesting thing about this raining hellhole of an island?).
Galar is just weird. Overall it feels like a soulless mess, but every now and then there's a touch of soul that stands out from the mess.

I like that every gym is a football stadium. People are genuinely head over heels for the sport here, and I'm a fan myself.

All of the routes are shit and this is only exacerbated by the DLC which makes them feel that much worse by comparison. Galar feels a lot like Unova for me, high highs and low lows, in both the region itself and the Pokemon inhabiting it. Very divisive and probably always will be. I fret for the kids who started with Gen 8, they're gonna be shit on endlessly in the years to come.

A few remarkable locations, and a whole slew of unremarkable ones. The story is not good and both "evil" teams suck ass. Gigantamaxing falls short when you realize the biggest change is an HP buff.The game doesn't look nearly as good as USUM and LGPE, the forced exp share feels unnecessary, and the lack of things to do in the post-game pre-DLC make it a play and never touch again experience. The lack of content in the maingame doesn't help this either, considering how small the routes are.The wild area is empty and there's nothing to do outside of loot spots and dmax battles. Its a poorly textured wasteland of vaguely sculpted landmarks and missed opportunity.The code system makes online a drag and GTS is locked behind a app separate from the game. They opted to sample noises for a lot of cries this gen, which makes new pokemon like Spectrier not unique because it's ultimately a horse that makes horse noises. The music feels like penis music from the amount of clashing themes and stock noises. The one forest area theme was great until the wolves howling ruined the entire atmosphere. The worst part is is that none of these will be expanded on and fixed because GameFreak opted out of a 3rd definitive version. It adds the post-game of previous games but doesn't fix other things like graphics, narrative cohesion, and team composition to make the game feel fresh. If you ever wanna play through gen 8 again, this is it, and its gonna come out to $90. For that reason, it's already in the same ballpark as XY for being just downright unfinished.

What I do like is the character designs and a handful of mons. I don't like that gym leaders are locked to a single uniform, but the characters themselves are more emotive than the vast majority of characters we've had in the series. Piers and Gordie are based. Purrserker, Runerigus, and Hatterene are some of my favorites period. Sucks they have to share a game with Eiscue and Calyrex.

Story became the most Kanto out of all the other regions post-Kanto.

The linearity of the main story (complete the gyms, beat Team Yell, beat the league) was surprising comparing it to other games with an evil organization headed by a lunatic. It's comparable to a lighter Vanilla (Kanto was already Vanilla)

Main Galar had too linear routes, but IoA and CT tried to remedy, came in a little late but appreciated.

Dexcut is the biggest flaw of the gen. Started with distaste that couldn't recover. I want my Toucannon.

Wild Area - you'd really hate it that it's a fucking snowstorm in Stormy Wilderness and you enter a Sandstorm in the next area.

Why on earth would Galar trainers have their teams not updated to the new mons? I would have expected rehashes of teams after CT.

I like the flexibility of going to the Wild Area and IoA simultaneously, and was shocked that CT had to be post game.

Game was designed for people to enjoy competitive more than the main story - maybe a fix they did after that lengthy story Gen 7 had. Which is something I appreciate coming from a story based gamer; Coincides with their Tournament style gen design this time.

As a whole the flow of the game from Intro - Gym Challenge / IoA - Tournament - Swordward & Shieldbert / Urshifu - CT & Dynamax Adventures - Galarian Star Tourney feels a long ass game considering you'd end up doing raids, otherwise it feels like Platinum's length.

Can we stop with the lore of Major and Minor leagues? Where the hell are the other gyms and cities then?

Gigantamax forms suck outside an artsy perspective. At least give them x1.25 HP immediately outside a move, or use the shield.

We need more challenges like CT's tasks, maybe add HM's again or even ride Pokemon?

Please give us the option to again get challenging AIs and teams.

Isle of Armour has good exploration but water travel is a chore
Crown Tundra is alright but I get confused at the layout at times, though that's a me problem

Also tundra needed a larger dex. I get it's about the legendaries but most of the wild mons were already in the game.

Swoosh DLC has 200 more Pokemon in the regional dex on top of base Swoosh already having 400 Pokemon in its regional dex to start with.

Yeah, because they arbitrarily locked shit to the post-game while Swoosh lets you catch tons of them immediately. i.e. Swoosh is less linear.

Main story was the worst in the series, aside from a couple locations most of the map in the base game was bad and clearly rushed, there were a few locations where it looks like they didn't have time to work on so they blocked access to it. The Wild Area was admittedly refreshing and it's my favorite part seeing all the Pokemon move around a map was great. The DLCs were fun while they lasted, I wish there was more story and more trainers to fight, the maps were also a massive improvement over the base game. Raids, Restricted sparring, and Dynamax adventures are the best combination of battle modes since the Battle Frontier. As for competitive, I like how they made making comp ready mons so easy but then they took two steps back with the introduction of TRs and Dynamax candies adding back some tedium to the process. Lastly overworld encounters are the best change to the mainline games in a long time and well overdue. I rate SwSh this way:

Main Story: Worst in the franchise
Region itself: Mostly rushed and uninteresting locations. IoA and CT make up for this somewhat.
Additional Battle modes: 3rd behind Gen 3 and 4's Battle Frontiers
Raising Pokemon: Best in the series even with the tedium of TRs and candies
Online: 2nd best behind XY

Overall while it has some aspects I abhor, there are still elements of it to be appreciated.

When I talk about non-linearity in a Pokemon game I mean side areas with unique Pokemon and additional items and trainers like Desert Resort or Virbank Complex in B/W2. Not an area that is technically large but is in reality light on content like the Wild Area.

Cities were cool for the most part, but the routes were the worst of the franchise, they are too small and linear, also we don't even have a proper Victory Road this time. Some areas could be good, like the Galar Mine, but just like the routes they are just too small and there isn't much to see and explore in there. Wild Area is a neat idea, but it felt rushed (at least the Wild Area for the base game), it's just one big empty space filled with Pokémon, and it's also the ugliest part of the game with shitty textures and pop-ins everywhere, but i also enjoyed looking for Pokémon, camping and training in there, so it isn't bad per se, just a half-baked idea, the Wild Areas of the DLCs are so much better and there is actually an existing level design, not just some huge empty space with Pokémon roaming around. It actually makes sense considering that the DLC's director and the base game director aren't the same.

There's a lot of missed potential in the base game. There's a decently sized gap between you starting and getting the first badge, but after that there's a gym in literally every new town you visit so it becomes a rush. Routes are mostly linear with little room for exploration. Outside of the wild area, Route 2 is the only place I can remember that has an extra area to explore once you upgrade your bike. It doesn't feel like there's many trainers on routes and being able to avoid all wild encounters really makes the game feel a tad shorter than it should. The mines in particular feel like they needed a second level to them to turn them into proper caves.
The wild area just feels flat and is almost completely avoidable altogether if you're just rushing from point a to point b. A lot of the areas feel kinda same-y and the constant weather changes are a mess. Altogether it feels poorly implemented and like it was just tacked on.
The DLC areas are my favorite parts of the game. Each area in IoA feels unique and is fun to explore. CT could use a minimap, especially for areas like Giant's Foot, but I still had fun looking for all the Regi temples. IoA and CT were the most fun I've had with a Pokemon game in years.

Galar as a standalone region is weak as shit. Wyndon and the other cities squander the potential of their real life inspirations and are just generally super boring, the wild area is shit, but most importantly it's like they couldn't commit to an idea of what they were going for with the region, structurally. The pre-release implied a more open sort of experience, but as we all expected, the wild area ended up being more like an N64 Hyrule Field they stitched into the early geography for the region, and then it's right back to the generic route-city-route-city formula. It doesn't feel properly integrated at all.

The DLC overworlds more or less suffer from a lot of similar problems to Galar - the same bad graphics, the same sparsity of content, the same lack of dungeons and so on - but it feels less egregious because they actually commit to the idea of an open area. It feels like they started actually having fun with the idea with the little touches like cave systems, more interesting biomes, the NPCs and neat little micro-islands off the beaten path and all that. The Wailord encounter was more entertaining than 99% of things that ever happened to me in the wild area, if for comedy value alone.

The next Pokemon region should be comprised of 4-6 (or more) medium-sized, species-diverse open areas like the DLC ones, spread the Gym Challenge and main story across those, let you complete them in a few different possible orders, provide transport links between them all and completely bin the route-city-route shit. It wouldn't exactly be GOTY but it would be better than whatever the fuck the last few generations have been.

The biggest thing for me is the wasted potential of the Wild Area. In concept I really like it, but it's just empty with barely anything to do, no secrets to explore. At least the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra have tons more variety in the landscape, caves, much more elevation, etc, but then those aren't even in the base game so it's a moot point.
I wouldn't mind the next games having another Wild Area, but at least learn from the DLCs and make them more fun to explore, and please let us actually do more things in them.

I mean it was alright. I haven't played the DLC, but the game was probably a 6/10 tops for me. There were a couple high points, which for me were the gym battles, several tracks of music, some of the new Pokemon and Hop, but everything else could have just been so much better. The environment just... come on. Pokemon has no right to look like this. Story was eh. Eternatus could have been cool maybe if there was any buildup to its existence in the first place. Rose was a low-mid tier villain. Bede was kind of dumb. You can tell these games could have been so much better. At least we got Marnie.

Wild Area needs a lot more foliage and detail to be believable. Pokemon popping in also sucks tremendously and they should at least be doing something that shows they have some sort of purpose in the environment (grazing, roaming in packs, hibernating, etc). Right now they stand in place awkwardly, except for sharpedo which are just a massive pain in the ass

I could forgive some of the inaccessible background stuff if they at least threw in some optional completely off the beaten path area to explore so you could actually give yourself some illusion that theres more out there even if there isnt. Finding some sort of easter egg mystery for the crop circle/Stonehenge town would have bene nice

Some of the towns are okay for what they are, others had good stuff/concepts but simply needed far more - Ballonlea, Wyndon, Spikemuth

I want a lived-in world.

Same goes for areas off the beaten path, especially in the Wild Area. Optional HMs or Secret Techniques would've been great. Imagine if, after using Rock Climb to get to the top of a tall mountain, you discovered a Gigantamax Corviknight den? Or a grove of rare berry trees hidden behind some cut-able brambles?

Galar itself is so devoid of any meaningful content that the almost the entire post-game, except for the battle tower clone, is just the Wild Area which has, by its nature of being a hub connecting areas which aren't important anymore after you first visited them, no content besides stuff you could do on routes on previous games. The Wild Area has no redeeming quality and it's already quite sad that this is probably the best part of the game.
The Wild Area wouldn't be that bad if every route of Galar was structured like a Wild Area in that it had more alternating paths that would allow the player to actually have some choices during the main game. That SworShie do not have any post-game content is admittedly not directly related to the Wild Area, but it definitely deserved way more love by GF in terms of graphics and content, since the only thing which really separated the wild area from the other routes was the free-moving camera and dens and one single minigame to collect watts.

Tl;dr: Wild Area is the best part of SworShie and that's a really bad thing since, as you said, it only has the same stuff as an average route plus some bland and poorly implemented minigame which you are forced to play if you want to collect items.
