What was her purpose exactly?
She didn't do anything but reading ancient texts and she contributed nothing to the story

her being Leon's friend didn't mean anything either except more dialogues "hurr durr Leon and hurr durr she's Leon's old friend" and instead of using this for her character, they made Raihan Leon's closest friend instead, making Sonia a completely pointless character.

The Leon connection is used as a parallel to Hop quiting what was supposedly his dream and changing it to something he could do.
As for her purpose, I don't know what your conditions for a character to be in the game are but there's multiple characters like that all over the franchise and in the same game. At least she did acomplish what she wanted.

She’s an aspiring Professor, and she was the reason why you learned about most of the ancient texts that you would eventually connect the dots together to learn the truth about Galar’s history and where the Sword and Shield were in the first place

i just finished SWSH and I didn't find her as an interesting character when they tried too hard to make her an important character
