I don't see how this is a bad thing. Previous gym leaders were so bland, they had to be fleshed out through doujins. Ever since gen 7, we are now getting actual personalities to shine through. So hopefully it never ends.

This, I really like this game's cast of characters
I cannot remember a single Gym Leader from Gen VI and some of the Trial Captains in Gen VII are a bit lost on me but the Gym Leaders here all stick out to me

I generally liked the alola cast much more because I don't give a shit about the sports side of pokemon, alola had a much more interesting story and backdrop that let the characters do things that weren't boring or predictable
