The point is that the fossils have been reconstructed poorly.
It can be expanded by letting a pro palentologist restore them properly, adding three new pokemon to the family.

The point is that the poor reconstructions are accepted as fact in the Pokemon world. If a pro paleontologist could fix them, it would expose the reconstructions as being mistakes, thus ruining the point.
