Usually they learn from this but some are really married to the idea of being there for a sick person due their own delusions of a soulmate needing them no matter what.
Again, it's safer and fun or freeing to explore this in fiction. But fiction is fact to the foolish and well, hopefully they move onto other things. But no, they just get a million fetishes when most people have one or two if any. These would be very bad fic writers for the most part.
