Nidoking and Rhydon are inspired by kaiju, shaking the earth as they move. It's not so much about the thick hides. Donphan's association is about the rumbling when a vehicle is headed your way. Burrowers travel through or change the floor. Claydol and Golurk are based on unearthed relics, with the distinction from Kabutops, Armaldo, Rampardos, etc being Rock having to do with the preservation of fossils. Landorus and Groudon are self-explanatory. Larvitar falls in line with Tyranitar being a kaiju, but there's the matter of Dark taking over because of its growing viciousness since it can only have 2 types. Ground for Gliscor I think has to do with it being a burrowing scorpion. Cubone is an exception since they just flavored it that way, since I don't think anyone can justify all its signature moves being Ground-type meanwhile Pokemon like Exeggutor don't get that luxury.
