It's not a placeholder if that's what you're thinking, it's just a thing Game Freak does now where a pokemon's cry is represented in text with a word for some reason.
Like how Calyrex says crown over and over when he's not talking through Peoni.

In the Japanese version, he yells "BOUON!" which sounds sorta-kinda like a roaring noise. But it's also what the Soundproof ability is called in Japanese. The localizers decided "Sound" sounded more like a roaring noise than "Soundproof", I guess.

Before launch, there was a Japanese magazine that had a "30 new features in USUM" article that advertised the new totem cries as a "feature". I think it's the only place they've ever officially acknowledged they were changed between games. Nobody really knows why, but they did it in the Japanese version too.

Why English Pokèmon dialogue lines are just words instead of their name like in Italian?
Example:Necrozma says "Lie...light!"in English,but in Italian it says "Ne...cro...zmaaaa!"

Why Necrozma should say LIGHT instead of NECROZMA?

For USUM, they decided to change the lines of boss Pokemon to be onomatopoeia, which is only really effective in Japan due to their words either being far simpler or more "whimsical" to properly fit a noise a creature could produce.
