Mega evolutions give viability to most of the compatible pokemon. Back when mega stones were around everyone used pokemon such as Manectric, Pinsir, Mawile and Kangaskhan.
The new gimmick favored some very weak pokemon but you never see people carrying Butterfree, Pikachu, Kingler or Appletun.

Magmar's "ugliness" is the type a monster should have, it's rooted in folklore and the cultural cues from oni and tengu masks are obvious. It's a traditional and folkloristic design.
Magmortar on the other hand just looks like a very american guy holding guns. It loses all hints of cultural continuity and taste, it's an utterly disrespectful design. Please fuck off with your bad and ignorant taste. If Sinnoh evolution were the great success you keep talking about they would still make them.

The difference is Mario games are meant to be standalone, self-encapsulated experiences. You go into a Mario with nothing, you experience it, you put it down and bring nothing with you. Pokemon games (used to) be about adding to your running total. You were building up your collection to send to future games. GameFreak obviously would like to move in the direction of games like Mario, only having to make a game and not having to support backwards compatibility, or worry about bringing back popular features, but they can't because the only thing that makes Pokemon popular over far better games IS its backwards compatibility. Look at how many people skipped SS because they cut the nationaldex.

They certainly aren't standalone when many people import their collections into the current games. You can access your Home boxes as soon as you get your Pokedex from Sonia for example. And that's not even including all the references to older games that exist. Team Rainbow Rocket was a thing too in USUM.

Not him, but that's an incredibly null point given Mario references it's own past games all the time. 80% of the costumes in Odyssey were just references, the Gushen capture was a FLUDD reference, and I'm sure I don't need to mention New Donk City.

Accusing me of nostalgia is pretty silly considering that you don't know how old I am, when I started playing or what pokemon I used as a kid. You're simply trying to disregard my arguments because you have no counterpoints.
I never said Sinnoh wasn't a great success, I said abominations like Magmortar aren't.
Cynthia and Garchomp have been fan favorites since the beginning and they're always brought back, but cross evolutions were ditched in the same generation where they were ruined. Gen 5 had no gimmicks yet there are no cross evos either. Your argument would have had weight if megas came shortly after gen 4.

So? There's a ton of postgame too, which also includes new pokemon. Not introducing new evolutions has nothing to do with "gimmicks", it's something they decided to not ruin the old pokemon. If they want to work on an old base they choose to make alternate forms that leave the old line unchanged.
Basculin is reoccurring for a matter of versatilty, it easily fits in many habitats and is useful for players as a midgame attacker. It has nothing to do with Cynthia, who is actively chosen as a reoccurring character while other champions such as Alder are not.

Gigantamax was actually retarded. A lot of them were cucked compared to their regular Dynamax move. Kingler honestly didn't even fare that badly compared to some, at least the -2 spread speed drop had unique utility, and he could always be paired with a rain setter. Duraludon is the worst one by far, losing a spread -1 attack for fucking "-2 pp and only if they attacked already". Yeah thanks, the opponent is really gonna miss these 2 Fake Out PPs.
