Still have the very first card I ever acquired, an oddish I found on the school yard. Also still have the first pack rare I ever pulled, a nonholo pinsir. My mom bought it for me and my sis to share and she asked if I was happy with what I got, I wasn't but I lied and said I really wanted that card to make her happy. lol

As long as you're not looking for 1st edition, eh, may he 1k? The gen 2 starters and lugia would run you up to a couple hundred each probably but the rest are fairly affordable iirc

The supply for Alter Genesis center exclusive box seem to have run nearly dry.
Get yours now if you care about the sleeves/deckbox or you'll pay scalper prices.
The regular booster boxes themselves won't be going up in price any time soon though since they're still being sold at the distributor level.

So what is the proper way to store cards? I've never been a serious collector or too focused on having my cards be in pristine mint condition, but I do hate when they end up bending and other such things. The bulk of what I have in general from several different card games is in ring binders, with the rarest and/or my favorites being in a smaller non-ring folder I can just pull out to look through every now and then. I also double-sleeved every one of them - is that a bad thing to do?

The TCG was dying in the mid 00's
The TCG as a game picked up in late 00's and with it a lot of collectors came back
Then it was a slow ride with a few bumps like Gold Stars price hikes until the Pokemon GO boom
Recently there was another boom with people getting back into collecting because of the lockdowns
And finally just a few weeks ago youtubers caused what seems to be a bubble with prices of older cards multiplying every few days

The pokemon tcg has had its down times but the franchise itself is making billions through other mediums
Now you can look at magic and say it's doing well but I say it's overhyped and a lot of the top cards have already retraced some from years ago

I cringe every time someone mentions sending their obviously played cards for grading, thinking it will do any good to them. hell, it probably hurts the value, some light played cards can pass for near mint easily if ungraded

Most of my stuff is packed away in binders. Some of my favorites are the two player starter sets. I have the big one with the huge cloth playmate and the smaller Blastoise and Venasaur VHS set. You can kinda see it behind Yellow.

Basically grading is a racket. Most people will grade a point under if they are honest. This is because you can send in a card to PSA over and over if its on the line and eventually a grader will call a 9 a 10 if its close. This is why BGA did half grades.

Collect because you like the card not for value or some number.

I’m solely grading to sell my old collection though, but thank you this information is really helpful.

Seeing cards be graded around 8-9 when my cards look similar or better than some 8s makes me believe that just because it’s not pack fresh doesn’t mean it’s not worth getting graded. I’ll find out I guess though, I have a base jap charizard that could be a 8.5 if I’m right, maybe it’s 6 though.

If you are unsure I would hit up a trusted local card shop if you know one, get there opinion on weather a card is even worth grading.

One more note is that old WotC cards could come out of the pack at basically a 6 or 7. Due to how things went in those early days printing and packing was far from perfected. Not that they do much better these days.

Well here’s what I’m seeing

I pulled this up randomly, it’s a grade 8 charizard, yet clearly you can see multiple edge marks, and still grade 8.

I personally am pretty harsh with my own grading, I believe at least, and I know I don’t have any 10s, however the card back I posted earlier looks better than this one that’s officially graded, unless I’m wrong maybe it’s more comparable in which case it’d probably get an 8, maybe 7.

So if people can get grade 8 with this kinda back I think there’s some hope.

Maybe it's just me. But does anyone else feel like the older holos look a lot better? And I mean this with nostalgia goggles completely off. They seem to pop out more compared to recent expansions. Newer holos seem really weak.

I'm not sure if it's to do with how older holos seemed to have the pokemon art and then the background effect is a completely seperate design, without anything that blends into the pokemon itself.

nah man, it's not a case of nostalgia glasses at all, wotc era shit just generally looks better
the framing, the artists (back when nishida gave a shit, sugimori's was still great and arita did 70% of the cards) were all very solid, and there was way less of the obnoxious cgi bullshit
now they just go apeshit with secret rares, all these golden, shiny, full arts, rainbow variants that you cant keep track of, to the point where regular gx's are worth nothing by comparison
compare that to team rocket's one secret rare or neo revelation's two, just night and day

Why do they even do the fucking Rainbow ones? They're ugly as shit, and everyone I know who isn't a set collector tends to try and get one of the other ones instead whether it's the regular version or the "Full Art" one, or when Tag Teams were a thing, the second "regular" art version.

Nah Gen 4 still used cosmic holo for everything, even the sparkly fancy shit live LV.Xs, Primes, Legends, and SLs, gen 5 is where flat foil with a slight pattern (lines, sunbeams, vertical lines) and textures on the "ultra rare" cards became the norm, even then though the secret rare cards in gen 5 and 6 were nice.

Holos went to shit when they dropped the cosmos foil for fucking mirrors. I didn't mind the BW tinsel foils either. But I also feel like sometime in DP or maybe HGSS they stopped trying to make the holos interesting and just always used them for shitty effects backgrounds. Plus the art got worse as most rare holos were CG trash.

Nah, the foil for HGSS cards were either bland or sexy as fuck on a print-run by print-run basis, somethimes you'd get foils that were popping off, swirls, the bigger circles, all that shit, sometimes you'd get some shitty flat holo with a few specks on it.

Cosmos reverse holo is so underused and so much better than the standard

I hated patterned reverses for a long time but that was because I always associated it with the LC's fireworks pattern (which I hated since it was hard to read and looked exactly like very common stickers at the time).

I always loved the fireworks holos and I know which stickers you're talking about, but I got my LC stuff a good decade after the set first launched so I don't really asociate them with those fake "sticker cards" that were going around in the late 90s/early 2000s.

It's a reprint of the promo Mewtwo from Hobby Fair that was an extra card in the vending machine series. That card used Sugi art that appeared on another promo Mewtwo that Wizards used as a First Movie promo, so when they finally printed this card in LC, the had their own artist draw special art for it. Nintendo seethed about it.

Oh I thought the set was incredible, and the fact that the reverse holos were new made them cool. I just remember being upset every time I ended up with a reverse of something that had a normal foil since as a kid I didn't have anything close to complete sets of the previous foils.

I hadn't encountered bootleg cards really, in NYC Chinatown I had probably seen them but assumed they were stickers (and didn't want a full deck of them). So to me I was just mad that real cards that were uncommon were almost identical to the stickers I could get at ShopRite, Pizza Hut and anywhere else with those vending machines. Hell, I had a friend who immediately tried to peel the sticker for his binder and ended up destroying a Dark Vaporeon because he had been given the card as a single and assumed it was a sticker
