There were some moments where I lost track of where I was but those were the most fun moments for me, I would then explore further despite being lost and when I eventually ended up in a new location I would be like "Oh, hey, so that's where I am, which means before I was just over there, oh yea that makes sense now"
Figuring out how to navigate maps is literally the fun part of exploring, I played through sapphire my first time without ever realizing there was a town map and had an absolute blast. going up from mauville, then over across the alien route 113, then down across 114 and 115 only to end up in rustboro was amazing because even without a map I could simply FEEL that it made geographical sense, and from there I figured that I just needed to go right and I must end up back at mauville, and sure enough I was right. I had lots of moments like that in CT and that's why loved it so much
