Calyrex is the main proof that you can't or you shouldn't judge designs by its cover. The design looked too weird before, but story-wise and animation-wise fits very well as legendary. As the forgotten legendary, not even citizens knew if the crown was the head or anything else, proving that they really forgot their existence and this helps you to immerse you in the story.
The thing I want to say is, if you analyze those designs you hate, it's very possible that you find something charming and endearing on them that would make you like it a bit more.
