This game seriously has no soul at all
it feels Gamefreak was forced to make it. You can't see any passion or love put into this game

Heck, even LGPE had more secrets and details more than this game.

SWSH is seriously so bland and outdated like it was made by fresh graduates with no experience.

Kalos and Alola felt so comfy and refreshing, Galar is empty and boring in comparison.

You can say many things about SwSh: outdated graphics, shitty story, annoying as hell cutscenes... But it has soul mostly thanks to the music. Galar is beautiful, it looks like a 3DS game, but a gorgeous one.

Regions in general have lost a lot of soul ever since they moved away from basing the regions off of just simply different parts of Japan. On the development side by losing the ability to base things off a personal connection from the developers we got a disconnect on the details in the designs of the regions. Unova was able to slip by with a pass because by being the region based off the USA, who's culture is literally just being a melting pot of culture it was ok, but Alola felt more like just a flanderization of Hawaiian culture instead of feeling like a trip through the rustic outskirts like previous games.

And Kalos and especially Galar feel incredibly hollow. Like they took just some iconic basic iconography from France and the UK and called it a day. There is so much you could use and play with with the UK as the backdrop to the game and its like they stopped after "bro Big Ben and football lmao." Why is Big Ben just a decoration to the main city, one of the most iconic buildings on the planet? Why wasn't there even a mention of a royal family, when UK is home to one of the few still living monarchies and easily the most iconic one. It's like they don't know how to make a character out of a region anymore, and that's before you even think about how genuinely awful SwSh looks visually.

I feel like the only moment like this in SwSh is when you shake the tree and a giant Greedent falls down and battles you lol. I don't even like Greedent but at least it fits the internal logic of the region and the Pokemon itself, which is rare nowadays

Middle ground: game+DLCs
Shitty way: Game AND third version.
Why? Because you don't know if there will be a new version, a sequel or something different so you're forced to sit one game for at least a year (and only autistic waitfags do that) or buy two times a game.
So yeah, DLCs are one of the few good things done by SwSh (in comparison of third versions).

I guess in the sense that you feel more secure buying the base game, but in the old days before Z version got skipped, you could usually always be secure in the knowledge that a "third version" was coming, or sequels in the case of B2W2. So you could just wait, you're right that you are missing out on the initial experience in the hopes of saving money for a better experience, which is kind of sucky.

However. Even buying both the original and then the updated version, only cost $80 or less back in the day. Whereas now the full experience costs $90, and is p much equivalent to what you could expect from a $40 third version game back in the day. More than twice as much.

that is what was going on. Third versions were just fixes and improvements. You act like they were the rest of the game, but they should be treated as definitive editions more than add ons. The logic of comparing them is really silly because they are so different.

Another neat touch I haven't seen anybody discuss was the background debris. If you used a move that hit everything, like surf or earthquake, you could break the rock or tree in the background and get an item from it.

Nah, third versions was even worse than dlc.
Why? Because if you bought base game already you forced to buy it again for full price and replay the whole story one more time to actually reach a bits of new content.
With dlc however you able to get new content for your already owned game right now and even cheaper than buying almost the same game again for full price.

Exactly, back in the day. If we had base version and third one on the Switch, buying both would be way higher than $80.

Only issue with the DLC is how nonsensical the complete package is. If you're a kid or a waitfag you could have just picked up the third/USUM edition for the price of a single full priced game at that time. Now with DLC they are selling the "complete package" version of the game with the DLC included as a standalone game but unlike every other company in the industry when they release a complete package/game of the year version, the full package is just the price of the full game + the season pass instead of lowing the price of the standalone game and selling the base game + the DLC at a new 60$ price tag.

I just miss having actual map design and exploration.
Kalos is the last region for me. It really just feels like BW but in 3D which made the transition smoother.

Nailed it on the head. Played it once when it came out and loved it. Replaying it for the first time and right now and it is still good. Been spending a lot of time going off the beaten path to find items and using the dousing rods to find even more. Lots of forks in the road, reminds me of older lands. I really did not get this feeling of satisfactory exploration with gen 7 (although i still like that gen, i need to replay it as well) but there is NOTHING saving gen 8. The only good thing i can see is post game grinding and comp battling. Might be fun to grindfor a team of high tech shiny mons. But the main story and the graphics and environment were so awful and soulless that i could not even get to that point nor do I think I could sustain myself at that point for long.

Glad you're enjoying it anon. The only thing i'd say is that since you're playing on Citra you will really only get a taste of what there is to offer.
The PSS is still wildly active today on 3DS. One of the funnest things to do is just play with online enabled and see what trainers come your way with battles/trades or whatever.
Oh, and despite people crying about HMs, Kalos only has 1 required HM for the whole game, being surf. The rest are all completely optional and just net you extra items. I think that was the best game decision they've made other than LGPE's way of doing it.

I think there is a way to get it hooked up to some servers for wifi play, but im not sure how. I will look into it after i complete the story and play some more. I remember doing wonder trades a lot when i was younger, and looking at the app menus made me nostalgic. The HMs really take me back! If I remember correctly, this was the last gen where they were used like this. It was nostalgic to have to manage them. If Surf was a physical water move i would teach it to my starter, but its not (i trained him to be a physical attacker.) I didn't want to double up on water types so I restored to the age old trick of a slave. The Pancham doesn't fight, but it knows Surf, Strength, Rock Smash, and Cut and is essential for exploring.

My fellow XY chads. For all of its faults, Gen 6 overall felt like the last games that actually felt like a Pokemon adventure. Gen 7 was good but story was heavy handed, and Gen 8 is just Gen 8. Being able to have some freedom into how you want to interpret your adventure instead of following a streamlined story is what I love most in XY and earlier generations

It's sad that many people honestly believe anything that came after is better because of this mindset. We'd have done anything to get out of Gen 6 just like we would have to get out of Gen 7, and look how it turned out. Railroading ablaze and gimmicks-aplenty.
Gen 6 is really going to be the last of old-style Pokemon gameplay, isn't it? The closest we've gotten since was LGPE and with how stripped down it is I don't even consider it mainline.

Almost every route has something to go back to after progressing through the story more, but at the same time the only HM necessary to beat the game is Surf.
Route 16 is completely optional, yet it connects to Lumiose and connects into Route 15 which ends up in Dendemille. I'm pretty sure this is the only example of this happening in the series for anything that isn't a water route in Hoenn.

We all didn't appreciate it while it was here. I loved X and Y to bits, but I slept on ORAS hard over trainer customization being absent. I spent the last two years of gen VI waiting for a Z version that never came, and I regret it so much. Wish I could have done more battling and trading with people. I know it's kind of a meme, but PSS really was a great experience.

And Kalos was fucking comfy.

I'll always give XY a free pass since it was the one and only time the "It's their first time doing 3D" and "they had to make a gorillion Pokemon models" excuse was valid. Even so, XY were perfectly serviceable as base first generation games just like RS or DP or BW were. If you judge it under those two things, XY turned out amazingly.
Who's to say how a Z would have turned out? If they had refined the base like they did the previous time? Fuck 20th anniversary and fuck Alola for robbing us of that possible greatness. And fuck ORAS too for if it hadn't existed maybe all that dev time would have been spent on Z instead.
Gen 6 is the most robbed generation of them all in nearly all fronts.

The gap/grind/gameplay loop is way different in this game because you can pretty much reliably get valuable things that you can eventually use to play online and then get even more things to use for competitive play. It's much more training friendly and honestly the seasons have been much more friendly for experimentation (even if a big gimmick is WP + DMax).

Not saying time should be unlimited, but SWSH's battle system is so unoptimized that's literally what people are taking advantage of to force time outs online.

The timer counts for each side so as long as you pick your moves quick you will never get timed out. The other player will just fuck themselves if you decide to start waiting at the end of a long game.

I would say they're about the same. Doubles adds some dimensions, and effectively adds new options as certain moves are straight up unplayable in singles, but it also takes away a lot of options with it. It's an offense oriented format, and while I'm no stallfag, I don't really like the inability to play it, regardless.

Look, anon, I'm okay with singles not being the format for official tournaments. I'm SORTA okay that they won't make matching for 6v6 easy. But it is absolute bullshit that GF designed PVP to inconvenience singles players at every turn. Hell, doubles can turn off the timer IIRC, but singles can't? That's some horse shit. Stop defending it. Just fucking stop. Shafting singles doesn't make me wanna play doubles, it just makes me want to stop playing.

Any competitive player will tell you that you don't just think about the two Pokemon out in play when considering a move, but also what your opponent has in reserve as well as your own reserves. So while it's one opponent on the field to consider, you have up to five more to think about at any given time. Compare with doubles where you have two out, but only up to two more to think about at any given time.
