The animation gives them life but can look bad on some Pokemon with how stiff their movement can be. The DS's small resolution really doesn't help either.
Gen 2 really got it right, where they're static (outside of Crystal's intro animations), but lots of Pokemon are given unique or dynamic poses that don't feel "standard" or basically like an animated version of Sugimori's artwork like some of Gen 5's animated sprites.
It helps them stick out more to me.
Gen 3 and 4 get this too an extent but the Gen 1 and 2 remakes weirdly back down on this in some aspects (but doesn't in others?). The Pidgey line of Gen's 2-4's (even 2 is a bit weird about it, though) sprite work is like my main example of this.
