Yes, the towers are "Japanese" (only because Japan borrowed Chinese architecture and a lot of aspects of Chinese culture), and the monks do look Asian, but that's the only actual strongly Japanese trait the game has. A sea serpent isn't particularly Japanese either. An island being surrounded by Whirlpools could be seen as vaguely Japanese, but I could argue that Clefairy is reminiscent of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter because it's said to have come from space like Kaguya. That doesn't mean that Gen I is like a Japanese folktale just because something vaguely resembles something Japanese.
