The fact that the Gen 5 starters universally disappointed, you were front loaded with a a generic dog, a generic cat, a generic rat, and 3 shitty monkeys you HAD to use if you didn't want to grind.
The problem ends up being despite Gen 5 having a lot of GREAT idea to force everyone to use new mons, up until after you clear the 2nd gym, you are almost exclusive being bombarded with Pokemon that share archtypes with old Pokemon but aren't as good, so it gives this feeling of "Discount Pokemon"
They should have made Wargle and Mandibuz a split evolution line, where you'd catch the chick Pokemon in route 1 and it'd evolve into Vullaby or Rufflet based on Gender at around between 10-14, then into Wargle and Mandibuz at 36. Then put Karrablast and Shelmet in the first routes too.
Suddenly you've got a early evolving bug Pokemon that requires you to trade to promote people to use Wi-Fi, and your theming of the early area of the game is 100% consistent with BW theme of duality.
I'd say if those 4 Pokemon had been the ones you were introduced to catching, Gen 5 would have done so much better
