Yeah, and then they realized making maze looking routes doesn't actually improve the quality of the game and they got feedback about kids not even being able to complete the game.

Now we have open world maps that are far better than any of the maps 2D produced anyway.

? Doesn't seem like a barren wasteland to me. In fact, I see multiple Pokemon walking around, making it less of a barren wasteland than the 2D games.

Seeing a red tree in the distance is intrigue. Seeing more of a hallway on a route isn't intrigue.

Going in one direction and seeing Aggron, then another direction and seeing Garchomp, then another direction and seeing Tyrantrum, then another direction and seeing Walrein is discovery. Walking down a line while encountering Zubat or Graveler again isn't discovery.
