Won’t really comment on their design but they added a great air of mystery to BW. They are obviously similar to the dogs both in that aspect and in having a sad, compelling backstory.

I think the Japanese word for swordsman might be a bit more broad than the English word. I say that not because of the Swords of Justice but Katanagatari, a series about a swordsman who doesn't use a sword.
