Left unchecked, he keeps progressing while other protagonists start later and later and have to play catch up. Realistically, he could be placed in the plot of Hoenn/Sinnoh/Kalos/etc and things would end up the same.
Effectively having the same power set of "the protagonist always wins" but with several years more prep time and experience than everyone else makes me think that he'd be at the top by default.
