Even its typing is odd because fighting/psychic/ghosts are abstract types

Golem was a great Pokemon in Gen 1. It's a bit worse than Rhydon, but still a useful Pokemon.

What it needs is a good ability like the other 3 of its kin.

Not even that great because Rhydon did everything it could do, but better.
Kinda like today, were Rhyperior rocks and Golem rolls away of the metagame straight into untiered.

It's a shame, I've grown to love this lad after using him in playthroughs of gen 3-4, I even liked his weird regional version.
Poor lad doesn't sell merch though, so I guess he's stuck being in the "gen 1 Pokemon that Gamefuck doesn't care about" club along with guys like Poliwrath and Tauros.

They both have to switch in. If you play Golem or Rhydon and your opponent plays no Zapdos you're 5 vs 6 either way.

A Rock Head Golem has a much more usable level-up moveset, in most gens, than the other trade evos, that need egg moves or TMs.
Golem gets Earthquake, Stone Edge, Rock Polish, and Double Edge, which is entirely usable and one of the best level ups amongst Rock types.

Rock is weird, it's like poison in that you expect it to play in the opposite direction of how it actually plays out - you would guess that rock is good defensively and mediocre offensively, while you would expect the reverse for poison. Doesn't help that most rock types have super fucking lopsided defensive stat spreads and in game they usually throw grass and water special attackers (and fighting attacks on random pokemon) at you from the early routes, including the starters. It just feels like a jobber type like bug or flying even if those types can be very good when not on shitmons.

I think he means types that are not based on your basic rpg/magic elements (fire, earth, wind) or based on creature/living organisms (bugs, plants birds).

While the other 3 are based on concepts that are strange for an rpg element system (fighting, psychic and ghost), Golem is pretty much just the "earth" element.

One of Golem's biggest problem is the inaccuracy of Rock moves. Part of the reason why Rock as a type suffers so.

Yeah, nothing between Rock Slide and Stone Edge. Rock Blast could fill that roll with three or more hits but that is a different kind of rng gamble.

Yes. Golem and Rhydon are slow, frail and have bad matchups against anything not named Zapdos. If it weren't for the ability to wall Zapdos, none of them would be OU because they're otherwise shit.

Golem has explosion, Rhydon has Substitute as plays on switch. With resistance to rather obnoxious Body Slam and your opponent's exploders it's not hard to find opportunity for switch-in. While yes, walling Zapdos is huge reason why they both are so important it is not their only job in Gen 2.

I think Geodude line should have been mono Rock in gen 1, but Golem probably wouldn't have been viable in comp if that happened because of Jolten crit Thundering everything.

I think that's a fairly niche use and a shaky defensive typing desu.
Golem having explosion gives it the opportunity of blowing up on Starmie on the switchin if you're playing on ladder and your opponent doesn't have Zapdos. Rhydon's substitute is only otherwise noteworthy when fighting seismic toss Chansey, which granted, it's really common, but there are better ways to pressure it. My point is, although both have their uses, they would never be OU if Zapdos didn't exist.

If Golem was mono-rock, it wouldn't wall Zapdos, which is more concerning than Jolteon in RBY OU. It probably wouldn't be viable because it loses stab earthquake and it doesn't wall Zapdos anymore, and while the better defensive typing is nice, the point is rendered moot because of its shit special and speed and the fact that it wouldn't be immune to thunder wave anymore.

I have noticed that use the geodude line a lot when I replay gen 1 and gen 2.
Unlike other rock and ground types, the line gets guaranteed stab moves through leveling, and they're often found pretty early.
It's a pretty solid line for early gen in-game.
