In one of his video interviews he mentions how he's become increasingly involved in the franchise's art direction since way back in gen 5. No doubt him being from the region's place of inspiration helped but him eventually becoming at director was probably inevitable. Given how young he is compared to the rest of gamefreak's staff, he may even become producer in a few years.

I know for sure he ended up making Bruxish's ref sheet but as far as him doing the design he probably just helped her figure out a good pattern for its scales

I don't like people that consider X Nu-mon is a discount/poor man's Y. It's stupid. I think Dhelmise doesn't underscore Decidueye in the slightest. Scrafty doesn't steal any of Urshifu Single strike's thunder at all. There wasn't any good reason to do what they did. But they did it anyway. That warrants criticism

The problem with the gen 8 mons isn't that their designs are bad, a lot of them are good. The issue is that Gen 8 has the same issue Gen 6 had where they all felt like they were added purely for the sake of adding new pokemon and not really thinking about what about them helps express the character and theme of that generation like with Gen 5 or Gen 7. Like sure there were plenty of filler mons in Gen 5 but most of the really good designs felt designed to fit with the USA themed region of Unova. But that's just a universal issue with Gen 6 and Gen 8; they're based off France and the UK but they don't feel like France of the UK. Alola sure as hell felt like Hawaii.

Because presumably that is the explanation for why they are not water-type, hell they don't even really learn water-type moves for the most part. Grapploct only has one type and plenty of water STAB so there's no real reason for it not to be part-water.

Because at this point they realized that aquatic environments have so many animals to make into Pokémon and they can't just make everything part Water type. Perhaps this decision was informed by Anorith and Lileep being aquatic animals and having to be part Rock, but not wanting to just copy and paste Kabuto/Omanyte mechanically.

One Jigglypuff per generation is fine, 90% of the dex is excessive. You have the whole "evolution" shtick, when you can start a Pokemon as cutesy, then evolve them into a proper monster. Instead of using these tools, Turner and his crew just start with "how do we sell this as a plushie".

Nah, I qualify these as "passable".
Scyther isn't even my favorite Pokemon, but it's a great example how you can make a cool and threatening monster, without going overboard like Omastar. They even had it right at Rhydon, their first design. There's absolutely no reason to abandon that philosophy.

It's the same cutesy generic shit we've seen on the western internet for well over a decade, barely a step above the "calarts" style. In that respect, he's not original.

Look, I don't think Turner is a complete cancer or anything. But I do think he needs to be reigned in in places. I really love Trevenant, was one of my favorite designs from gen VI, but some of the other designs are really meh. I'm gonna catch shit for this, but I absolutely abhor Buzzwole. It's a meme design. It's literally there to be a meme. Haha big buff mosquito that poses.

But really, that's probably criticism that could be levied against GF as a whole at this point. Gen VIII has a few more meme designs, I'm sure Turner isn't responsible for all of them. But fuck gmax Meowth and Sirfetch'd. Terrible, awful fucking designs made to be forced memes. Wish someone would get fired for those.
