I'd think you can still follow its main plot pretty well even if you may wonder who all those people are if you just replace Pokemon with "creatures". There is that weird creature that obviously is some genetic cloning experiment and has huge powers, takes refuge on some island, invites challengers to fight it in some tournament or sth. The main character gets there, his "creatures" get snatched and obvious clones made of them, staing with the whole cloning theme, then the "creatures" fight each other in a useless battle, then another creature appears which seems to be the source of the bad one and they have a fightin. And mean everyone should be able to understand Ash's sacrifice, he is hit and "dies" showing them the senselessness of their fighting, his "pet" tries to revive him with shocks to no effect, they all cry and that revives him, this shows the bad creature that there is still good in humans and the world and he releases them and warps back time to before the events happened.
Seems pretty followable to me. Might not get who those two guys and cat are and ither characters, but the overall plot seems pretty straightforward.
