So yes, it did underperform, part of that was a drop in projected sales and suddenly since then, we've moved away from silly plots and scenarios to return to nice, kid-safe plots, that don't hae to be overthought and the sales of both systems and software back those choices up.
You seem to forget they're keenly aware this started as a fad and are firecely protective of keeping it going as long as possible, due to its guaranteed money aspect and getting kids on Nintendo tech to maybe continue selling them Nintendo products beyond Pokémon.
