With Girafarig's beta design, Minifarig's beta backsprite and beta evolution data for a Stage 2 Girafarig evo it seems as though this line may have once been a thing, only to be replaced by its middle stage with no evidence that a full 3-stage evolutionary line ever existed.

Lol which one is which? Tangrowth is one of my favorite mons ever but I know that Gelanla is a better design objectively, and would have made the Tangela line way more iconic and memorable. But it's okay. We at least got something that wasn't wholly divorced from the initial concept, unlike Farfetch'd fans who lost Madame completely

Game Freak would never actually have the stones to do it (firstly because they're hacks and secondly because Nintendo yakuza would probably execute them for revealing beta secrets) but I find myself secretly hoping that a potential Lets Go Johto would borrow/canonize a lot of elements from the Gen 2 beta builds. The design here is ambiguous as to the critter wearing the wolf skin, but it would have been really cool if they went the "sheep in wolf's clothing" route.
If I had to guess why GF cut such an awesome design, I'd guess its probably because of the "dead wolf" implied by the wolf skin. Not sure if they thought western parents would take issue or whether they thought it would lead to questions awkward implications of a dead Pokemon.
Not sure why either explanation would hold sway, considering Cubone...Definitely might show a change in attitudes now that Pokemon was HUGE

Cubone was designed long before Pokemon was a thing in the west. The Wolfman line existed very late into GS development- pic related is from September 21, 1999. Pokemania was really gaining traction in the west around this time, and it makes sense they would have wanted to play it a bit safer this time around for the international market.
But it also could have been Johto's complete lack of ice areas and the team ultimately preferring Sneasel's design after spending the time to iterate upon it.

Stantler is just extremely boring compared to a lot of the designs we actually lost.
And we already had Miltank and Dunsparce, and Smeargle to fill the single stage Normal type quota, so having it feels pretty redundant

I definitely think Girafarig should have at least had a prevo. It's the perfect counterpart to Donphan.
Hell, an evo for both (In gen IV) would have been great, too, since both lines are basically small versions of two of the biggest real-life animals.
Also Donphan should have been Normal/Steel.

Gen 2 has so many single line mons that have been so ignored. Shuckle, Girafarig, dunsparch, skarmory, stantler, smeargle, and miltank all haven't had ANYTHING. No prevo/evos or megas or gmax

It had been almost 10 years since then. It was a new dev cycle for the new games. They recycled the concept, maybe it was the same designer, but ofc they are not gonna reuse it wholesale even tho it would have been the better decision, because they are obligated to design everything on paper from the ground-up for the new games and then move on to sprites, I think Gen 4 was the first gen where everything was conceived and designed on paper first.

Ofc, Gastrodon was not actually changed that much between Gens 3 and 4 so idk. Maybe if beta Tangrowth had been recycled in Gen 3 it would have been closer to the original

There are some Pokemon I feel, no matter what, should remain single stage, even if others get evos or prevos. I mean look at gen 1, there were tons of single stage mons at first, and now practically none.
Shuckle is one of the total gimmick mons, along with Ditto, Smeargle, Castform, Kekleon, etc that I feel should stay that way.
But Skarmory could totally use a buff or a baby or both.

Also.... this may be controversial but I assume Pokemon were made with kind of the expectation that they would appear in certain areas or fill certain niches. So, for example.... I feel that Wolfman and Warwolf were probably cut because of localization concerns, and then were replaced on the Ice Path with Swinub and Piloswine. Similarly, Misdreavus pretty much directly replaced Norowara, occupying the same slot and having the same name for a while, and the Norowara line was probably also cut because of localization concerns. I guess what I'm saying is, there are many popular Pokemon that probably wouldn't exist if not for the cuts

None of these Pokemon need prevos.
Prevos should really be reserved for Pokemon that already seem more like mid or final stages, so you could throw the prevo as a rare find in an earlier route.
Now Skarmory just reeks of stage 2.

Warwolf isn't a werewolf, it's a berserker. Norsemen warriors who wore the skins of animals to channel their spirits. Funnily enough it's not the only Norse themed betamon.

Anyways as you know it was a two stage evo line, but it seems that it's preevolution was going to be scrapped but warwolf was intended to be in the game pretty late and even got an updated sprite. Ultimately a few months before release it was replaced with Corsola

I miss the fact that Unown were nuclear shadows from the nuclear explosion that destroyed the Ruins of Alph, and that Sunflora was meant to be a mutated sunflower (Grass/Psychic) that gained energy from the explosion, which is why it was found exclusively around the Ruins of Alph in the beta and had no pre-evo or evolution.

Gets an ability that makes Hidden Power calculate its ability and whether it's physical or special based upon the opponent's weaker defense. For cases with multiple weaknesses, it picks a random one of them.
The chosen type remains as long as Unown is on the field.
