I am trying to complete my Emerald regional dex and I have come to the stark realization that this may have been a Coalossal waste of time. I am 130ish mons down, have been grinding the Elite Four over and over again with my EXP share and my now Lv. 93 Sceptile, and then it dawned on me: Who the hell cares? I'm gonna have like three boxes of fully evolved sprites and a stupid Johto starter. Why did I do this again? Why do people do this again?

Because It's video game comfort food. Completing the dex doesn't involve any real skill, its just doing the same low IQ shit over and over. You do it when you wanna relax or want something to do while watching TV.
Unironically, if POGO didn't have regional exclusives then completing the dex in that would be more skillful since at least some mons are locked behind good PvP performance.

Oh I will definitely finish it. I like Hoenn's dex as IMO it has a lot of variety and some straight up cool looking and impressive to get creatures in it. But I'm at the point where all I have left to do are a bunch of Pokemon I don't care about and sometimes just to level up one takes one or two shots at the E4, or even three. I might just start trading them over to FRLG and grind them up there to speed it up.

Pretty much. I'll do a chunk of it, get bored, say I'm never touching this shit again, and then hours later or the next day there I am again back on Emerald.

I'm doing the same thing currently anon, at 308 mons. Just finishing up Colosseum for Ho-Oh and then it's on to XD.

I completed the moon and UM pokedex since there are a lot of diferent ways to find pokemon and its like 400 mons at max, I don't know why you'd do it if you don't find it fun.
It also helps that I was playing with emulator speed moving the save to the 3ds to trade around, wouldn't have done it if the servers were down

Yeah I wonder that too, the games are fun enough to play through a single time but that's all. Real pokemon masters play the tcg

My man! Like your style. I've been building and transferring a living dex for 17 years from Ruby up to Sword, all legit on cartridges.

I felt a weird combination of nostalgia and emptiness when I found a zangoose traded from my best friend in middle school. That little blob of data is older than his child who is playing Shield right now.

Yeah, kind of. Hunting down all of the Pokemon the first time, when you don't know everything, and assuming that you didn't look it all up, requires some more effort though. Because it usually requires you to do some exploration to figure out where some Pokemon can even be found.
