Normal because they have the widest type combination and move coverage, as well as multiple gimmicks like transform/metronome/assist for that surprise factor.
Fairy because many of my early gen faves gained it as a typing (togepis line, azumarrils line), and because the two or three design aspects they cover appeal to me.

Dark/Ground. Krook is based and both types have some great mons. Greninja, Ttar, Mandibuzz, Bisharp, Sableye, Umbreon, Grimmsnarl, for Dark the list goes on. For Ground, you have Nidoking, Mamoswine, Quagsire, Swampert, Gliscor, Garchomp, Hippowdon, Flygon, Excadrill. Of course there's plenty more for both types. Great combination with plenty of different types of mons. Plus a lot of them are cool too.

The most difficult part is probably finding two types with good monotype pokemon.

Water comes to mind as a good type with many pokemon.

Rather difficult what to do regarding opposing electric and grass types with only one type left to use.
Dragons resist both and normally get fire and ground coverage. Water at least resists it's ice weakness and the dragon weakness goes both ways. Fairies are a pain but I feel that's the best way to go with only two types.

So water and dragon.

Quagsire with drizzle
Kingdra with swiftswim
Barraskewda physical attacker
Suicune calm mind set
Haxorus DD set
Goodra with sap sipper

this is my question as well.

If they all have to be monotype/share the second type, then I'd probably go with Ghost and Steel. But if dual types are free, then I'd probably go with Grass and Ground.
