He’s supposed to be the Champion that will save the region but lost to N, and even asks you beforehand to take charge just in case he loses, which speaks volumes about his prior confidence in winning.

The lax attitude and vagabond-style of living makes him come off as someone who doesn’t care about his position even though he apparently personally trained one of the Elite Four members.

Also, being that he lost to N, N becomes the “Champion” fight and Alder’s fight is left for postgame meaning if you didn’t take the time to rebattle the Pokémon League, you’ll never actually battle him. Story wise the League was just destroyed, so some casuals could’ve honestly thought the League wasn’t going to be rechallengable and thus never face Alder.

Then there’s the fact that he gives up his position to Iris and retires, so once again you never get to battle him unless you do his postgame battle at his house which many people likely missed.

And finally, Bug-types being his “speciality” likely put people off, and his theme just isn’t good. Alder doesn’t even have a major presence in the anime. The guy is just forgettable.

Has some kinda thing with Syncamore yet we never know what it is other than her calling him by his first name
She's a movie star that uses a team that reflects types of movies she's likely starred in, all but her Gardevoir, it's been her lifelong partner since she was a little girl, they sleep together, they act together.

The anime tried to fix this by making her and her Gardevoir so in synch with each other Diantha doesn't even need to vocalize a command for Gardvoir to understand what it needs to do in battle and it's main stratgey is to nimbly dodge attacks as if it were dancing around them, but that's quickly shut down by incompleted Ash-Greninja, then when Team Flare does it's thing Diantha doesn't do a thing to help

Honestly when it comes to champions and what they should be only Lance, Steven and Cynthia seem to actually show why they deserve that tiel and even then the XY directors OC DONUT STEEL defeated Steven easily and 2 generations later Lance returns just to job to Leon even through Lance was at a disadvantage because he'd never fought dynamax'd Pokemon before. I think that's what I hate most about Leon, he's clearly a skilled trainer but making him the world's strongest when the world changes each gen, making his ace a fucking Gigantamax Charizard, making it so his gimmick can only be preformed in his region makes it seem like Leon is nothing without Dynamax power.

Also reminder that his strongest pokemon passed away prior to BW. This gigachad is well passed his prime and his entire character arc in BW/BW2 revolves around passing the torch to the new generation.

He's also much harder than Iris if you fight him immediately after her which is the first thing you can do after beating the game considering he's in the town next door

I just feel his BW team could have had more interesting stuff on it. They fix this BW2 by giving him Reuniclus, Conkeldurr, Krookodile, Chandelure, and Braviary as other options for him.
For his BW team I would have just dropped Vanniluxe for Cryogonal. Maybe Bouffalant for Mienshao.

My theory on why his team is shit is mostly because they didn't want to double dip with other trainer's aces. As a result, the best Unova Pokemon were pretty much all 'taken' so to speak. So he was left with a random bunch of shitmons.

Even so, you can make a much better party without double dipping.

His theme is underwhelming as hell for being in a generation praised for its music. Even Leon's is better for at least incorporating the main theme of Pokemon, though Alola did it first and better.

Well, not that Alder is uninteresting, it's just that like most things done in BW, he's unconventional and Pokemon fans cannot stand someone breaking the mold, so a champion who's not about power, not a bishe/waifu and doesn't have a secondary trait that can be turned into a meme (like Steven and rocks) ends up being unpopular overall.

I still like him like I like the rest of Gen 5 but him being unpopular isn't much of a surprise to me or likely anyone else.

God its amazing how subtly and effortlessly Gen 5 was able to push its morals and narrative message compared to later gens.

Gen 5 was the start of Game Freak trying put a moral for their stories and its the only one that doesn't awkwardly beat you over the head with it.

honestly Alder always stuck out to me because of the fact that he gets fucked out of the champion role + the fact that his backstory is one of the few times death is ever brought up in Pokemon, but I'm obviously a minority

I like him, more than Lance and Blue for sure. The only meh thing about him really is BW champion theme, which is probably the weakest, but I still like it. Steven is a good champion, but also makes for a good extra Trainer battle, so I'm on the fence since Wallace is such a meh champion to me. Cynthia was good, Diantha... Well, I liked her Champion theme and the final arena we fought in, not gonna lie. Iris, I liked her Champion theme as well. Kukui was meh, but his theme was decent. I have not played gen 8, so I can't comment on Leon.
