I don't understand how you can throw out an entire set of perfectly good sprites just to implement a poorer, more generic aesthetic. Months, YEARS of work down the drain to make way for subpar wetwashed versions.

We really were robbed. This feels like the situation of the clearly proto-GSC sprites that made their way into Blue vs. the final product of GSC, except the outcome with final Diamond/Pearl is garbage unlike the kino in final GSC with 10/10 must cum sprites like Gengar.
