master ball rank was 4x more populated in singles than doubles last season: https://swsh.pokedb.tokyo/trainer/list?season=11&rule=0&name=&page=727 last gen singles on console was over 10x bigger than doubles, but that was because console doubles was split between bsd and vgc.
anyway, op's problem might have to do with NAT settings, which have an impact on finding players if sitting on anything other than A/B.
