...so that's why I quit.

Rival 2 and Whitney will require grinding if you don't overlevel your starter on the trainers before them, and since grinding sucks you're likely to end up with another level 36 Feraligatr.

Start over, then play without starter: pick your alternative on routes/caves before 1st GYM.
Then start building a team by starting to train another mon if you feel that your current mon(s) are powerful enough.

Wow dude, I'm about 14 hours into my current Crystal playthrough and my Feraligatr is only level 30. I'm battling Team Rocket in the Radio Tower right now and I have a full team of level 27-30 mons.

did the same but with a Kadabra with Psychic and elemental punches and you sweep through everything like god mode
