Considering some of the human concept art I think GF was really trying to make Pokemon more like a normal RPG as part of its attempt to appeal to older fans

precisely, BW2 helped a lot by simply opening up the regional dex, makes it so much more attractive for replaying.
BW has a deeper story, sure, but once you play through the game once you've seen all of it, and on a replay it's just fluff

ooh, strawmanning? nice. don't think kanto is all that good at all, hoenn and sinnoh are much better in the linearity department, and practically every other region has more small towns that are just there to give some more atmosphere. BW feels the need to make every town very important and that quite frankly makes the region feel more contrived.

and what would that be exactly? is it the story? the regional dex lock? how every city has a gym basically, with no small towns just for the sake of it? none of those are particularly enticing in my opinion, and even if bw2 is basically the same grid i have a far better time there because of the dex opening up

You'd like Galar Mine 1 then if you like seeing Unova pokemon instead of Kanto Pokemon. Woobat, Roggenrola, Timburr, and Drilbur instead of Zubat, Geodude, Machop, and Diglett.

The Unovadex is 155 pokemon, literally the content of Red Blue. It was the last time GF made a large number of new Pokemon for a game. Why put effort in when people just want regional variants and to digivolve their Lucarios and Charizards?

Because BW2 makes it obsolete, it has all the good things from BW without your rivals constantly interrupting you with their route 1 shitmon teams and its the first game to have a truly great dex

yeah i suppose it was a rhetorical question. my issue is that it completely loses its value in a replay because you already know exactly what happens, and even on the first run it wasn't that spectacular. the fact that every game since gen 3 has a literal who kid having to save the world is a bit tiring anyways, the less plot the better imo

that is exactly what i do, my guy. i do like the fact that they introduced many new pokemon, but lockng the player into only them is the issue. have some variety, give us some less known pokemon so they can have a chance to shine, y'know?

I get your point but just about every game locks you to 150-200 in the main campaign. Even GS with its technical nat dex accesibility keeps a bunch in Kanto and a handful inaccesible period without transferring.
