The wild area is basically Hyrule Field from OOT except Lon Lon Ranch and the paths to Gerudo Valley, Kakariko Village, etc are removed.

No, because the Wild Area is ultimately pointless and doesn't fit the description of open world at all. The closest thing we've gotten to Open World in Pokemon is Kanto/Johto and Kalos Route 16.
The wild area just boils down to another hallway, they needed to let you at least go to Turffield or Hulbury from it. Meanwhile, you can't even go to Hammerlocke from it despite there literally being a fucking entrance there.

I think you're really underestimating the wild area, and have limited knowledge of its functions

I guess you have never played a Xenoblade game if you are capable of making statements like this.
I dont even mean to say that Xenoblade games are GOOD, but their open world is on a different levels entirely with impressive landmarks and hidden locations with rewards. Wild area is both small as fuck and contains basically nothing except couple of slapped on rock formations.

BOTW is a little too open and gives too much freedom to really work with pokemon unless they wanna really change up the formula.
Xenoblade's approach to level design would integrate perfectly with pokemon. It's still linear with you moving from point A to point B, but the areas are filled with tons of optional stuff and enemies of various levels scattered about that you can't deal with until late game.

Monolith Soft should just make a Xenoblade spin-off with Pokémon gameplay, the series has got some pretty neat creature designs.

Because that would require changing the formula that has been making GF cum money for the past 27 years. Why take a bold risk actually making a good game when you can just collect your gazillion dollar paycheck every few years after you re-format the last one you made and add a few reskinned pokemon?
