"It just gets bigger" isn't bad most of the time, just as long as it isn't most of the dex, and there's SOMETHING to keep the Pokemon unique.

I don't know why Rapidash is there, for example. Aside from being bigger, it has a longer mane, different eyes, and the horn.

Poliwrath is probably one of the only good examples of "it just gets bigger" because it's a joke.
You expect the tadpole to evolve into a frog because of common sense, but instead you just get a bigger, angrier tadpole. Presumably angry because it didn't become a frog.

Pretty much this.
But also they don't "just get bigger", their expression gets fiercer showing their evolution from young baby to adult monster. That sounds like nitpicking but character design 101 says that eyes are one of the most defining parts of a character.

People are autists for the origins to a Pokémon’s design and creation and these types of Pokémon are the most lacking in that aspect and probably didn’t require much thought in the creation besides just changing a few things from the preevolution
but ultimately it’s whether the execution looks good or not that matters

It's not necessarily bad, it's just boring. If you like it that's fine but I can't bring myself to care much about a Pokemon evolving if it barely changes when it does and most of my favourites have drastic evolutions.
Also, I don't get this "anti-genwunner" boogieman, lots of Gen 1 Pokemon have wildly drastic evolution lines and every generation has their share of "just gets bigger" mons. Pidgeot is no more worse than Vanillish.

These are just descriptions of the designs, none of this makes any of them good. Now that's not to say they're bad, Magnemite in particular is a great design, but this is not at all a defence for any of them.

Politoed has many of these traits, so even someone who has never seen a pokemon before will immediately recognize it as a frog character.
Poliwrath doesn't look like any animal in particular, I can only associate it with tadpoles because it starts as Poliwag.

I'd switch those descriptors, honestly. The ones on the left are bigger but have noticeable differences, whereas the ones on the left, specially Typhlosion, are LITERALLY just a bigger version of their prevo. The only significant change is their stance.

It has other distinctive and obvious tadpole traits like its shape, its suckering lips, its visible guts and the tail.
Poliwrath has no mouth.
It has never been seen with an open mouth, whether you look at the games, anime, cards or promo pictures. He doesn't even spray water from there even though Politoed and Poliwag do.
