Make it feel like you did something to clear it, instead of it just disappearing when you get a badge.
Hell, make the Gym Leader go "Oh shit, there's a block? Let me help you out bro" and it's better than random bullshit.
HMs are unironically a good idea, since they really make you feel like your Pokemon are actually helping you traverse the world. I'd love tons more field moves. Just either make them all solid moves or make it so if a Pokemon has learned one, they can use it, even without it taking up one of the 4 move slots. Or remove the slot restriction and replace it with something like "In this Gym you can only keep using the first 4 moves you use!"
It's absolute nonsense that they replaced HMs in Let's Shit with fucking human tools and shit.
