Would you want to see the main series switch to double battles being the standard? I personally would but I'm curious what /vp/ thinks

Absolutely, but it should have PBR/DQ-style battle system to account for the battle speed because as it is now the game is pretty sluggish.

The way I see it, I think it would be cool if all "official" matches were Doubles. That being Gym Leaders, E4, Champion, and other ranked/exhibition/tournament battles against the AI. Standard trainer battles, fights against the evil team, etc. would be Singles unless the trainer you're battling specifically wants to do Doubles.
That way you get a healthy mix of both while letting the player recognize that Doubles is the official format both in lore and irl while still letting them have fun with Singles, ranked or otherwise.

Raihan's fight was very fun so in theory having either the whole game or at least important matches be doubles would be great
Problem is, the game would run at a snail's pace, and you know they will never optimize it

If Gf were a half decent developer we'd get a speed up function for ingame animations like normal JRPGs have. I'd also like an option to select whether I'd prefer single or double battles at the start of the game, like a difficulty setting or something.

Also if these were being developed by a real studio, all matches would be triple battles, or really, triple battles against horde encounters with varying amounts of Pokemon, like in Persona/DQ/pretty much every JRPG

I’d be interested in seeing them switch it up now and again. Single battles do have their merits, but another game like Colosseum with only double battles would be cool and mix things up. Hell, I’m sure (if you were competent enough to do it) you could balance a game around only rotation battles and it could be fun.

In terms of in game battles I think there should be a good balance of multiple different formats. Singles, doubles, triples, rotation, etc. I think gamefreak maybe needs to tweak triples and rotation battles tho, they’re a little poorly balanced which is likely why they were so rare. But my point is, variety is a huge help in keeping the gameplay fresh. I agree that doubles are more interesting than singles by a mile but having a good balance of both is best in my opinion

There's literally no way to make a fun, engaging and fair battle against AIs with Single Battles so absolutely. It shocks me that we're still stuck with the outdated as shit Singles battle formula.

THIS. The main reason the games were mostly singles before is because that’s all the hardware could handle, now that we’re on the switch there’s no reason thar battles shouldn’t be laid out as 3v3 for every trainer battle and 3v3-5 for every wild battle.

What in the absolute fuck are you talking about?
Singles is the most prolonged and sluggish format in the game. In 6v6 you can easily get 90 turn long battles.

Nah, XD was fine and only gave you eevee, worst case scenario just maje route 1 singles to give players a chance to catch something and as they progress and see more and more pokemon in battle they'll be encouraged to catch and train more instead of steamroll with starter.

If you want to compare 3v3 singles and 4v4 doubles, doubles is still more fast paced. There's less switching around and sinking one of the opponent's pokemon is a lot easier, part of the reason why doubles is the meta of bulky tanks rather than fast sweepers.

It should be an option in settings, like Switch/Set. Let people who want to play singles play singles. Let the people who want to play doubles, play doubles.

You need to think about how to synergize your 2 Pokemon.

Personally I think it's a way better format and should be utilized for basically an entire mainline game (besides wild battles and the first gym so you can ease in and build up a team).
