Sceptile, blaziken and Swampert also have different builds and demeanors, it's nothing new, the difference is that in older generations such traits were designed with a broader selection of shapes, animal references and body types, giving the pokemon more appeal for different kinds of people. Past ones were also more relatable in virtue of the fact that their personalities and roles were more subtle and dynamic rather than completely preset.
Swampert didn't need a gigantic drum to make clear that he's the more physically imposing member of the trio, and his design doesn't pidgeonhole you into seeing it as the guy who kicks the ball or the guy who shoots the arrows, his morphology lends itself to different roles.
I don't see why all the options have to be static characters, and I don't see why they have to be based on a single animal.
It's cool that some pokemon reflect the kids' aspirations but one could also represent its basic function, which is that of a fantasy monster you train and use in battle.
