Haven't played a pokemon game since diamond and I'm looking to get back into the series, should I give B/W a go? Should I just play the sequels? Are there any romhacks that improve them?

I'd recommend the sequels instead, they honestly obsolete BW1 almost entirely. Play Blaze Black/Volt White 2.
