I didn't know a single person that didn't play pokemon during the time that I was a pokemon fan as a kid (2007-2012). Literally every second of my free time was spent playing pokemon with my friends for all of gen 4, and a little of gen 5. Wasn't until BW2 came out that this ended, since people were starting to get too old for pokemon (13-14ish)
I really miss those days, made the games inherently more alive to play with friends and talk about what you're doing in the games,

Absolutely none of my friends play the games. Some do enjoy the Pokemon themselves, and one emulated gen 2,3,4 games several years ago but that's it. They've been recommending new franchises to me actually, all of which are insanely amazing and I'm glad. I've never been a Pokemon loyalist, not in the slightest, but I'm glad to be exposed to even more franchises that show what good games are supposed to be like.

Tbh, I knew people who played it but I was too shy to engage sith them. My few friends didn't play the game, and even then I couldn't play with them because I was poor to buy the latest game. When gen 4/5 came out, I still played gen 2/3. As time flew on, fewer people cared about the game and my passion for it was also withering out. It wasn't college of all places that I got back into it again, playing all gens 1-7, soon going to play gen 8. If anything, I take pride playing alone, enjoying what I want and doing what I want without people convincing me otherwise.

My brother and I were disappointed, and our day was ruined because that entire day we were talking about which Pokémon we were going to trade each other.

I traded a few pokemons back in the GB days with my cousins when they came over (like once or twice a year since we're all over the country). I even completed my Pokemon Blue pokedex once thanks to that.
Not anymore until the 3DS games when I traded another few pokemons with an online friend of mine. Yeah it's never been one of my highlights.

Traded Gen 4 pokemon with neighbor years ago. One of my best friends would come over to trade pokemon in Gen 3 and Gen 4 games. I haven't seen nor heard from him in years...One of the girls I was hanging around in high school was playing pokemon Gen 5. I gave her some advice and traded her the starters she couldn't get. Another was a kid in my software development class. He was playing Gen 3 even in high school traded a few pokemon he wanted. Havent seen him either...

While I didn't have any friends to trade and battle growing up, I always had my brother (1 year older) to play Pokemon with, and we always bought the different versions depending on what we liked (I got Black because Reshiram looked cool while he got White since he liked Zekrom). It's been like that ever since we got into the franchise during the 3rd Generation. (Fire Red and Sapphire was what my brother got while I went for Leaf Green and Ruby, and later Emerald)

Played gens 3-7 with my sister to trade with and from 4 on pokemon became popular again so some friends played too plus wifi was a thing. Gen 1 my parents wouldn't get me a gameboy because we had a computer that played games just fine so I "didn't need a dedicated toy small enough to get lost just for that" and didn't change their minds until Crystal when pokemania was dying so even my friends who liked it didn't really play anymore.

Secret bases were also fun in R/S/E. I thought I was a genius for discovering how annoying Wobbuffet was to fight.

I was in middle school when Pokemania hit like a truck, me and the other boys would always trade and battle with Red/Blue/Yellow during recess, before school started and sneakily while doing P.E.
We didn't really care about the pokedex (I completed it both on Red and Yellow tho), we mostly traded with each other to get the bonus xp and reach lv 100 faster, then we battled and did classrooms tournaments a lot. Some of the best years of my life. I still remember beating a friend's Mewtwo with my Yellow's Pikachu thanks to a lucky paralysis.
Then it came high school and Pokemania was no more. I had only one friend in my class with Gold (same as me) but we never traded/battle, too embarassing I guess.

Me and my cousin grew up like brothers, we both loved Pokemon since gen 1 and used to trade and battle all the time, both with cards and video games.
Sadly he lost interest in pokemon and growing up he became a genuinely insufferable person so I'm alone now.
