That, and there are now people in middle school who have literally been raised by Youtubers. A lot of parents just pass their toddlers a tablet and turn autoplay on, so for them these thumbnails are the norm.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. Hell, it's better than the fucked up shit I was exposed to as a lad on the internet. Still, just saying, I don't know if it's just correlation at this point.
