There's also probably a bunch of random characters from gen 5-8 that are Japanese or Half Japanese for no reason.
Japan has a weird thing about disliking foreigners so they randomly insert Japanese people into other countries. That's why Ken from Street Fighter and Solid Snake are half Japs despite them not even looking like it at all.
The Sun/Moon protags are notably from Kanto, probably for the same reason the later Jojo stories took place in Japan instead of Europe.
They did that because stories with non-Japanese protagonists have trouble selling Japan.
People seem to forget just how xenophobic Japan is.
