Switch is extremely mainstream. There’s people I’ve known since grade school who have never played video games prior buy switches. Animal crossing mainly being a console seller for bitches. Once you buy a new system you’re gonna want more games, and Pokémon is probably one of the first few you may go to. One of my friends who hasn’t played Pokémon since HGSS bought a switch with Kirby of all things, and then wanted to get back into Pokémon and got sword, though he did say it kind of sucked.
Also Pokémon is more of a mass media franchise than it was, say, 10 years ago even, and it has been amazing a more diverse, albeit casual fan base. GO especially has pulled in newer people, and they even made a switch game aimed at pulling them into mainline Pokémon. I’d say this combination of new fans along a switch being in almost every household virtually is what’s lead to the increase in sales. I don’t think it’ll continue with the next games though. Only possibility will be the first gen 9 games
