Baby Pokémon were one of the best ideas this series ever had and their only flaw is not being expanded upon more.
Lapras, Scyther, Pinsir, Heracross and Skarmory should've gotten baby versions before they did away with the concept.

Babies are alright i guess. Cool to have the character exist, but they aren't that important for gameplay unless they come with some cool egg moves or learned moves or something.

There is not a single redeeming quality to the concept of baby Pokemon. They are just shittier, unevolved versions of existing Pokemon that nobody will ever want or use. Complete wastes of Pokedex space.

This. Pre-evolutionary stages simply should not exist at all. There's no point in playing the game outside of VGC and Showdown.

There really isn't much to the game outside of the battle system.
Keep them for niche formats & proper level curve, I guess, but the game could do away with that entirely & be fine.

So many of them are unnecessary though. Why did Pikachu, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Marill and Chimeco need babies? They're already small and cute, and they're even cuter than their pre-evos.

Babies like Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, etc are awful. Those Pokemon were already available immediately before/after the 1st Gym, there was no possible reason to make them weaker. Especially since it now takes fucking forever to even get the original Pokemon, since Friendship evolutions take forever.

Babies work best when they're given to Pokemon are too strong to catch in the early game, like Elekid, Magby, Budew, Munchlax, etc.
The issue is they were basically NEVER used for that purpose until like Gen 5.

They are kinda cool in concept, I adore most of the designs. But outside from that egg in Crystal, the player is never encouraged in any game to use them. They are (mostly) available through breeding, and that usually not something the player does in a regular playthrough.

I love them but I think they're very confusing. They're supposed to make certain mons easier to get and give said mons access to special moves, but they have to be bred and the moves they can get are often not that interesting. Certain 1st stages that should be babies aren't babies and can breed, certain babies don't look like babies, certain others have to retroactively have a smaller, cuter version of themselves made so that they can have a baby stage.

Gamefreak mismanaged the concept and I thought they had completely dropped it altogether until toxel was made.

They should be used to expand upon a Pokemon that feels a bit empty, to make unpopular/ignored pokemon get more spotlight and use by having players use the baby and evolve into them, to make pokemon that normally are only found lategame be available sooner
The only one that really feels like it succeeded in its role to me is Chingling. Chimecho ticks all the boxes for a Pokemon that needed a baby and Chingling delivered, but every other baby is for a Pokemon that is already small/cute/appears early or is Mantyke which is almost always only available by the time you can already get Mantine.

This wouldn't be an issue if GF let the berries that increase happiness be purchaseable. I evolved a Pokemon pretty much instantly in SwSh because I stuffed it with the happiness berries that I'd collected throughout the game.
