While I don't care much about pokemon mechanics, but the split was actually needed because there were many pokemon that couldn't take advantage of their stats (ones with high special stats had physical moves and vice versa)

This is a good thing. Pokemon aren't supposed to be perfect and have cardboard cutout moves.
