I never understood this retarded mentality. Miltank isn't hard, Clefairy is. Literally has an extremely high chance to roll OHKO moves, and can wipe your party in 6 moves, unlike Miltank which needs to build up, which you can screw over if you decrease it's accuracy.

You'd think the game about capturing all sorts of monsters would encourage players to use new or different monsters in their set and to build different strategies than spamming an attack, but I guess that's not what Pokémon is about.

Pokémon has NEVER been about that because it is ridiculously easy. Pokémon is a joke of a game and anyone worth a damn can beat them. Whitney is a pleb-filter.

Attract applies to 75% of pokemon, so you're also likely unable to attack her while she ranks up her rollouts or self-heals.
Strategy isn't the thing you need to gauge here. She is the first gym leader to have a pokemon that requires ANY strategy. For you to get a drowzee just to trade for a machop you've likely either heard about her in advance (because you're b& and the game is literally older than you are) or because you've lost to her already.
All of these hindsight arguments are bullshit when you try to imagine yourself in the time, with no internet, and just this sudden difficulty spike in a game otherwise geared towards 6yo's using their biggest attack over and over.
No other gym leader in gen 1 or 2 was so difficult at the time, and only two come to mind in gen 3 that pushed that envelope at all. She's a stand out for requiring you to think for the first time in the series.

That you have to specifically use Mimikyu, Zoroark, or Malamar is indicative of how hard it is. If you just use your normal team and it doesn’t include one of those you will get your shit pushed in. Contrast 90% of fights in Pokemon that you can get through just by being the same level as them and using healing items.

my strat as a kid. KO clefairy easy. when milktank comes out, swap to shitmon i caught and use sand attack. when it gets kod, swap to another shitmon and use sand attack. once I got 3 or so sand attacks up, swap to pokemon that's strong and start chunking her.

stay upset. I remember catching a few pidgey specifically for my sand attack strat. Hell, you get mud slap from Falkner and I always saved that TM for Cyndiquil if I picked it so I could add a few mud slaps in for chip dmg and more accuracy down. The strength of milktank is it's bulk + attract + rollout getting stronger each hit. Use a female/genderless and sand attack it so it has no accuracy means it will -never- be able to attract or set big rollout stacks against you meaning ez battle.

Machop isn’t even the only option. Far from it. Mareep - paralyze it. Oddish - paralyze or sleep it. Gastly - sleep it. Noctowl - sleep it. And I’m forgetting others. Hell even starters can make some decent attempts, especially Bayleef since it’s bulky and gets reflect. Quilava - lucky burn. Bayleef - reflect and chip at it. Croconaw - try to flinch or freeze it. There are tons of great viable options, even among the most common mons in the game. Whitney isn’t hard and never has been.
