Take something like golden eye which was revolutionary in its day and compare it with modern contemporaries like CoD; that's an example of something I would consider dated because the formula for first person shooters has improved so much since its release. Whereas you look at pokemon and they've added things like weather, abilities, terrain, gimmicks forms, and the physical/special split, all of which makes the game better but only marginally so. The originals consisted of:

Being more simplistic does not mean it is always outclassed by sequels. That's the reason you don't see people saying that the original super mario bros are bad because being dated doesn't mean it's not fun. Yet despite all of its technical shortcomings it still manages to blow anything gen 7 onwards out of the fucking water.
