Serious question:
Can you actually live (or afford to live) with the money/benefits/whatever you win out of participating in VGC tournaments and winning? Of course, let's just pretend you manage to reach top 1 on many tournaments
How good would you need to be to win more than the average U.S salary?

By tournament winnings alone - no way.
But winning a lot of tourneys generally opens up a way to a successful Twitch/YouTube career and the money you get from that easily exceeds average wageslave job.

With TCG, maybe. But there's an even higher cost with how much product you need to buy.

Its still inconsistent for most players. In dota, the prize pool for the big tourneys is massive, but 90% of pros can't make a liveable wage off prizemoney alone. Even for the best teams, its hard to win very consistently and the more assured income from sources like sponsorships and content creation allows for much more job security than the feast-or-famine nature of prizepools.

The exception to the rule would be franchised esports like league of legends that count all pros as employees of the devs company, but they are few and far between.
