I can't find a thread where this will fit so I'm starting my own:
Thread topic -- Getting your niece and nephew into Pokemon. Where do you start?
What's a good age to introduce them to Pokemon games?
Which platform would be a good starting point?
What game do you get them into first?
I have a niece who's turning 6 and a nephew that's turning 8 soon and I'm thinking of getting them their very first gameboy and pokemon game for them this Christmas. I have my concerns if they're too little to begin the path to becoming a trainer, but I think the time might be right.
The console I'm thinking of starting them off on is a Dual Screen Lite or possibly a 2Ds brick. I think the brick is more prone to getting abused since it can't close to protect the screens, but the DSLs will be from older frailer stock so I dunno if that balances itself out. I wish I could afford a Switch for each of them but unfortunately I cannot. Maybe I would go the distance with a Switch + Let's Go P/E if I knew for sure they would appreciate it and respect taking care of the system. So far I'm not yet convinced but we'll see.
The game I'm thinking of starting them off on is Heart Gold and Soul Silver. I can find some versions of the game that aren't "pokewalk compatible" for 15 bucks a piece, so the price is right. I assume this is a modded cartridge with an SD card in it, and as I've never used those before personally I hope they're easy to use and can still fight against each other. Alternatively I've been advised to start them off with a Fire Red, Leaf Green game as their first, but I know they'll enjoy the touch controls and whatnot so I've thought of the next best thing.
I'll take any and all suggestions and am happy to discuss the topic for anyone else thinking of doing the same for their kids or their nieces and nephews. I already own a New 3Ds and Alpha Sapphire so I could get them those too and battle with em, or I can pick up a copy of HG SS for myself when I get theirs.
