genuinely curious, what were folks' problems with these games, now that sword and shield have come and gone? I understand being disappointed that you can't battle wild pokemon before capturing them, but they're gorgeous and charming and don't irritatingly railroad you. plus, the writing isn't complete shit, because they're remaking games where the writing was around the edges without fucking embarrassing cutscenes.

OW encounters and ridable pokemon. Two features I’d easily rather have than fucking stunky and glameow being in the game or my charmander doing slightly more fire damage when it’s at low hp.

it's nice how they center the mascot pokemon and make them feel like yours. the unique animations for following/ridable pokemon are really nice. the world as a whole looks really nice, and the roaming wild pokemon look like they're actually meant to be living on the routes. it feels more like a cohesive place than any of the other games I've played, and that goes a long way for me

honestly, I found the catching minigame a relaxing alternative to wild battles (I thinkit fits the kind of game LGPE is trying to be), the thing that I really didn't like about it was the forced motion controls

I think in handheld mode you can just press a to throw a ball, the issue for me in in docked mode you had to play with a joycon (no pro controller) and you had to flick it at the screen

Light tap on the d-pad and that's nothing compared to losing the Sevii Islands, expanded pokedex, and game mechanics that were up to date for their time. Nothing can make up for losing all of that.

I’d rather have less maps and pointless mechanics if those fewer maps are more fun to actually play the game with over more shitty random encounter hallways chock full of box filler.

Didn't even have the FRLG postgame islands

Overworld encounters are literally the only thing people praise, and they're not even good. Even fucking RANGER had OW encounters that interacted with the player/environment in basic ways. Why is it the Switch games just have them spawn into existence in front of you, and stand about looking goofy in their shitty T-Pose models waiting for you to interact?

Riding was nice too I guess, but it's hard to enjoy when the map is so shitty

My main issue with this game is that there just isn’t much to do. Like master trainers are cool and Shiny hunting is always fun, but I found myself getting bored after only a few weeks, and I’m one to usually spend a lot of time on an individual Pokémon game. It was fun though.

The OW encounters were so incredibly half-assed that I refuse to believe the game had a QA testing phase. They just "pop" into existence with no logic or fanfare. Riding Pokemon added little beyond slightly faster travel - which running and the Bike are for - and could only be done with 18 Pokemon, 7 of which behaved no different than just walking. This is inexcusable, given they cut everything that wasn't from Generation 1, besides Meltan/Melmetal.

GameFreak is not a small indie company - they have the single-most profitable multimedia property on the planet. They do not need you to mindlessly defend them over minor bells and whistles.

If you really need this explained to you, your standards are just about looks and not depth. One playthrough of FRLG and comparing it to LGPE should be enough to cause disappointment, that a remake made many years later on much more powerful hardware somehow didn't make a GBA game--that already had issues that should've been addressed--obsolete. That's the big issue, that LGPE is an alternative and not a complete upgrade compared to FRLG.
The same applies to ORAS and Emerald, and even branches out to other series like the FF7 "Remake". If a remake is not better than the original, and still leaves plenty of justification to play the older game, then the remake doesn't really help fans. That time and effort could've just gone into making a new game if they wanted to give a new experience, but instead they take half-measures both ways by rehashing 90% of the content and whipping up 10% new stuff to try to "spice" things up.

Most of the problems with LG are less that its a bad game and more that its entire concept is based on pandering(despite numbers, including LG's very sales proving it doesn't work) and doesn't seem like a game that should come out after USUM. Itself also flawed because of its relation to other games rather than it being bad on its own.

SWSH is the first game I think its actually a bad game.
